Three analyses with facts about competition in the construction sector
The Danish Competition and Consumer Authority is publishing three analyses focused on competition and productivity in the construction sector. All three analyses have been prepared by independent consultancies for the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority.
Director General of the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority Jakob Hald says:
"The construction sector is an important part of the Danish economy. Increased competition and productivity in the sector will increase competitiveness and benefit consumers."
"As part of our focus on competition in the construction sector, we have had three analyses conducted. We regard them as good, factual input for future discussions on productivity and competition in the construction sector."
The Danish Competition and Consumer Authority has commissioned three studies focusing on areas which may affect competition in the construction sector. The three analyses are:
Price lists agreed upon as a part of collective agreements in the construction sector - prepared by Incentive - shows that this kind of price lists (minimum salaries for piecework) can impede the application of new working methods and materials, and reduce competition on price. This may weaken the productivity of the sector.
Voluntary labelling schemes in Danish construction sector - prepared by Cowi – shows that voluntary labelling schemes may increase the cost of construction and restrict competition. A voluntary labelling scheme is a label which the manufacturer has created and used in the industry without interference from the authorities.
The potential for direct trade in the construction sector - prepared by Cowi - shows that it is less costly to purchase directly from manufacturers and suppliers of building materials, but that there also may be other advantages by purchasing through a wholesaler.
