The use of International payment cards is increasing

The Dankort is the favourite payment card of Danes, but the use of international payment cards is increasing. This is evident from the analysis "The payment card market in 2016", which the Competition and Consumer Authority prepared for the Minister for Business and Growth.

Director General of the Competition and Consumer Authority Jakob Hald says:

"The Dankort remains by far the most frequently used payment card, but international payment cards are on the up. It is a clear benefit for both consumers and businesses that more payment options are becoming common. I hope this can help foster development in the market for payment solutions."

International payment cards are gaining in prominence in Denmark, but the Dankort remains the most frequently used payment cards. Both the number of Dankort cards issued and the number of Dankort transactions continue to rise, but relatively speaking payments made with international payment cards are growing the most. In particular, international debit cards are being used more.

In 2015, international payment cards accounted for almost 22 percent of all card transactions, while in 2014 the proportion was 19 percent. Looking back to 2010, only about 10 percent of all transactions were conducted with international cards.

The number of physical stores accepting international payment cards has also increased. In 2015, approx. 60,000 physical stores accept international payment cards. For comparison, about 80,000 physical stores accept Dankort.
