For more than ten years, the EU-Presidency has organised a European Competition Day. Denmark continues the tradition. The "European Competition and Consumer Day" focuses on how stronger competition and active consumer behaviour strengthen growth in Europe. The Danish Competition and Consumer Authority is hosting the conference on March 8, 2012.
The Danish Minister of Business and Growth, Ole Sohn, European Commissioner for Competition, Joaquín Almunia, and European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, John Dali, will give the key note speeches at the conference.
Deputy Chief Economist at OECD, Jørgen Elmeskov, will give a speech about the regulatory barriers to competition. Chairman of the Office of Fair Trading, Philip Collins, will present the UK experiences of sanctioning breaches of the competition rules.
Director General of the Danish Competition and Consumer Authority, Agnete Gersing, says:
"It is a great pleasure that the people who have the greatest influence on European Competition and Consumer conditions will attend the conference. My hope is that the conference will give us inspiration to create better conditions for competition and stimulate active consumer behaviour in Europe. This will be to the benefit of the consumers.”
"The interplay between competition and active consumers is an important driver for growth and new opportunities. This is also the case in times of economic diffi-culties. The more we improve our ability make markets work well, the greater the benefits to society."
The conference will include a press meeting where journalists will have the opportunity to ask questions to the commissioners. Journalists can sign up for the conference here
